Ordinal Numbers


Ordinal Numbers:


  • first - çawwal (çawle)
  • second - têni (tênye)
  • third - têlit (têlte)
  • fourth - râbiý (râbýa)
  • fifth - kêmis (kêmse)
  • sixth - sêdis (sêdse)
  • seventh - sêbiý (sêbýa)
  • eighth - têmin (têmne)
  • ninth - têsiý (têsýa)
  • tenth - ýâcir (ýâcra)
  • last - çêkir


Examples:


The first year - çawwal sine/s-sine l-çawle
The third time - têlit marra/l-marra t-têlte
The tenth day - ýacir yôm/l-yôm l-ýacir
The last floor - çêkir ţâbiç/ţ-ţâbiç l-çêkir

Notes:


  • Ordinal numbers are invariable when placed before a noun, but they must agree in gender when placed after. 
  • Ordinal numbers after 'tenth' are not used in Lebanese Arabic, they are replaced by the word 'Number - raçem' followed by a cardinal number, e.g. 'the eleventh man - rijjêl raçem xdaýc'.
